Hi friend, I’m Maggie Tolliver, the outdoor living enthusiast behind Porch Lush. If you’ve ever looked at a plain concrete slab or a porch that somehow became a drop zone and thought, I want this to feel like me, you’re in exactly the right place.

I believe your patio or front porch can be the coziest “room” you own, even if you rent, and especially if your budget is more clearance rack than designer showroom.

Why porches feel like home

I grew up in a house where the front porch was the true living room. It’s where the day started with coffee and where evenings stretched out into neighborhood hellos, family chats, and that slow golden-hour kind of calm. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was learning the most important decorating lesson I know: comfort is a choice.

That early porch life turned into a lifelong hobby of designing and styling patios, decks, and porches. And I’m not talking about perfectly staged spaces that never get used. I mean real spaces where cushions get sat on, planters need water, the wind steals napkins, and you still want it to look lovely when friends swing by.

Most of my projects are small-space and real-life friendly, the kind you can do in a weekend without needing a garage full of tools. If you like renter-smart upgrades and “use what you already own” creativity, you’ll fit right in.

How Porch Lush started

Porch Lush started the way a lot of good things do: one small project at a time.

I began by rescuing weathered outdoor furniture and trying to make it work again. I’ve sanded flaky paint, repaired wobbly legs, re-tied chair seats, and learned the hard way which “outdoor” fabrics fade fast.

For example, in my own full-sun spots, I’ve had basic polyester cushions lose their color in a season, while solution-dyed acrylic covers have held up much better. Your results will depend on your sun, humidity, and how much exposure your porch gets, but those little material choices can make a big difference.

Over time, those trial-and-error lessons became my favorite thing to share because they save you money and frustration. At Porch Lush, I write like the neighbor leaning over the fence to say, “You can totally do this, and here’s the shortcut I wish I’d known.”

Our mission

The mission is simple: help you turn any outdoor space into a welcoming retreat, using approachable ideas that hold up in real life.

That means we focus on:

  • Comfort first, because a pretty patio nobody wants to sit on is just outdoor clutter.
  • Budget-friendly creativity, including thrift flips, simple DIY upgrades, and smart splurges where they matter.
  • Durability, with materials and finishes that can handle sun, rain, and everyday use.
  • Seasonal joy, so your porch feels fresh without needing a full redesign every month.

One quick note on durability: products like exterior-rated spray paint and clear outdoor sealers can be great, but prep and surface type matter. What works on metal may not work the same way on wicker, plastic, or unfinished wood, so I’ll always call out what to use where, and when to skip it.

What you’ll find here

If you hang out with me on Porch Lush, you’ll find practical, encouraging ideas that meet you where you are, whether you’ve got a big back deck or a tiny apartment balcony.

Lived-in styling

We’ll talk layout, furniture placement, and the finishing touches that make a space feel intentional. Think outdoor rugs that can handle muddy shoes, pillow mixes that don’t look fussy, and creating a simple landing spot near the door so the porch feels like a natural extension of your home.

If you want a quick win: try my “seat, set, soften” reset. One place to sit, one place to set a drink or keys, and one soft layer like a pillow or throw.

Upcycles that last

I love reviving wicker and other outdoor staples, especially pieces that look rough but are still sturdy. You’ll see tips for cleaning, prepping, painting, sealing, and choosing supplies that hold up through the season. If you’re new to this, I’ll always tell you the “good enough” version and the “extra durable” version.

Start with: a simple clean-and-tighten pass. Wash it, let it dry fully, and tighten or replace hardware before you spend a dime on paint.

Weather-smart picks

Outdoor spaces are demanding. I share what I’ve learned about weather-resistant fabrics, cushion care, and easy routines that keep things looking fresh without turning you into a full-time porch maintenance crew.

Start with: a 10-minute weekly tidy. Shake out rugs, wipe tables, and stash cushions if a storm is coming. Small habits beat big overhauls.

Lighting that glows

Lighting is my favorite fast upgrade. We’ll cover bistro lights, lanterns, solar stakes, and simple ways to layer light so your porch feels warm after sunset. One of my go-to combos is string lights overhead plus a battery lantern on a side table.

Start with: one warm light source near where you sit. It changes the mood instantly.

Seasonal planters

I love celebrating the changing seasons with planters and small decor swaps. Expect ideas that feel festive but still grown-up, plus plant pairings that give you that lush look without constant babysitting. (If you want an easy win, herbs by the door count as both pretty and useful.)

Start with: one “thriller, filler, spiller” pot by the entry. It makes the whole porch feel cared for.

My porch rules

If I could hand you one guiding idea, it’d be this: start with what you have, then add comfort and glow.

A basic outdoor space becomes inviting when you give it:

  • A place to sit that feels supportive and soft enough to linger.
  • A place to set things, even if it’s a little stool or thrifted side table.
  • Something living, like a pot of herbs, a tough fern, or a planter that makes you smile.
  • Warm light for evenings, because that’s when outdoor spaces really feel special.

Start here

I’m so glad you’re here. Pour a drink, step outside for a minute, and look at your space with fresh eyes. There’s almost always more potential than we think, and you don’t need a giant budget to bring it out.

If you’re not sure where to begin, try this easy first project: clear the drop zone, add one comfy seat, and bring in one planter. Then hang a simple set of lights or set out a lantern. That’s it. You’ll be shocked how quickly it changes the feel of the whole space.

Whether you’re here to refresh a single chair, cozy up a bare porch, or build a whole backyard feel from scratch, I’ll be right here cheering you on with doable ideas, honest lessons, and plenty of porch-loving enthusiasm.

Welcome to Porch Lush. Let’s make your outdoors feel like home.
